Engineer's Toolset: end at a port map
The SolarWinds workflow that turns a mystery LAN into a filed document: sweep, resolve MACs, walk the switch, export the map.

01What you are buying
Engineer's Toolset is a drawer of sixty-odd network tools with one shared credential store. In practice three of them do most of the work on a mapping job — Ping Sweep, MAC Address Discovery and Switch Port Mapper — and the rest wait for the day you need a MIB walk at 2 a.m.
02The mapping workflow

Turn SNMP on first
On each managed switch, configure a read-only SNMPv2c community or an SNMPv3 user, and allow poll requests from your workstation. Without this step the port mapper has nothing to read.

Sweep for live addresses
Ping Sweep builds the list of answering IPs with DNS names — the layer-3 picture every other tool starts from.

Resolve every MAC
MAC Address Discovery attaches hardware addresses and NIC vendors to those IPs, bridging layer 3 to layer 2.

Walk the switch
Point Switch Port Mapper at the switch's management address with the SNMP credential. It correlates the bridge table with ARP data and returns the answer nobody else gives you: which wall socket corresponds to which device.

File the result
Export the port/VLAN/speed table. That export — dated, attached to a diagram — is the actual product of the whole exercise. Re-run quarterly and keep the history.
03Before you pay
The honest test: if you cannot name the switches on your network by hostname, you do not need this product yet. A free sweeper answers the home questions; the Toolset starts paying for itself the moment "which port is that on?" becomes a question anyone asks you out loud.
04Asked around
Is Engineer's Toolset the same as Network Performance Monitor?
No. The Toolset is desktop utilities an engineer runs on demand; NPM is a server platform that polls continuously. Separate products, separate licences, often confused because the marketing sits on the same page.
Do I need SNMP for everything?
Ping Sweep, MAC discovery and trace tools work without it. Switch Port Mapper and the MIB tools are SNMP-only — no way around that, because the data they read lives in the switch itself.
Is there a free version?
No free tier. There is a time-limited fully functional trial from solarwinds.com — enough to map one network completely and export the results before it ends.
